I used to do a lot of plein air painting, usually small oil sketches. My brother-in-law, John Beerman, ordered some nifty little compact pochade painting boxes for us from England. They are small and perfect for an outing, usually at dawn or dusk, when the light is at its most magical.
On the left is a photo of my pochade box, all set up for painting, in Harriman State Park, in NY.
These are some of the small paintings I made when we were vacationing in Rangeley, Maine, summer of ’93.
The British oil/watercolour artist Trevor Chamberlain was a fan of pochade boxes – used to paint in the front seat of the car.
